about the project

Nanjing Nanzhan is the magnum opus of Ma Yansong's Shanshui City. In an otherwise indistinguishable grid of concrete and glass, Nanjing Nanzhan transforms six blocks of towers into a rolling lifescape. Office, hotel, and residential towers are perforated by garden terraces and volcanic displays of nature. Beneath the towers sit a garden containing a retail podium comprised of stacked planes connected by walkways emulating traditional Chinese passages. The circulation of people is joined by a contiguous path of water culminated by a reflecting pool and traditional Chinese temple. Above a simple landscape is the desire to bring emotion, spirituality, and history to an archetype dictated by rentable space and store frontage.
